Mar. 21st, 2026 10:22 amI've seen two Boston Ballets in relatively quick succession over the past month, both combo programs featuring two pieces; the first was "The Rite of Spring" (Elo's, not Nijinsky's) paired with Pite's "The Seasons' Canon," and the second was a premiere, Stromile's "The Leisurely Installation of a New Window," paired with Ashton's "The [Midsummer Night's] Dream."
Breaking with the actual curation of the productions, I'm going to talk about "The Rite of Spring" and "The Leisurely Installation of a New Window" together because they both came first in their productions, they had kind of similar vibes, and I experienced similar feelings of mild disappointment about both of them that were not technically the fault of the productions. I was really excited about "The Rite of Spring" because I wanted to see some ballet dancers do a dramatic ritual sacrifice, and I was really excited about "The Leisurely Installation of a New Window" because I wanted to see some ballet dancers slowly install a window. Instead, both of these pieces were kind of abstract explorations through dance of the Relationship between the Individual and Society, and I think both would have been enjoyable for fifteen minutes but ran a bit long at half an hour.
The description for "Window" in the playbill reads:
Eighteen dancers inhabit the work through distinct but interdependent roles. The Seeker stands close to tradition, moving with discipline and clarity. The People operate within shared systems, attentive to both order and its quiet tensions. The Reformers introduce disruption, not as spectacle, but as pressure applied from within.
This did help me understand better what was going on in the dance, as the Seeker stalked around holding a book and then portentously passed it off to some dueting Reformers, but also made it feel a bit like a LARP that I was not participating in. On the other hand Reeves Gabriel of The Cure was There and Participating in Ballet Music (and every bit of marketing wanted you to know that Reeves Gabriel Of The Cure was There and Participating in Ballet Music) and occasionally the music would get very thrillingly electric guitar and you'd be like "Hello, Reeves Gabriel of The Cure!" So it's not that I didn't have a fine time, I just would have been okay with somewhat less of that time.
However, after these very mildly disappointing openers, I loved both "The Seasons' Canon" and "The Dream" very much! The Seasons' Canon is, justifiably, a known Boston Ballet showstopper -- a huge piece with a huge cast, and as you guys know I often have trouble with a piece that is not trying to tell me a story but this piece is truly just Humans Make Big Shapes and it's riveting. Could not take my eyes off it. The trailer here gives a bit of a sense but of course is not that much like seeing it Actually On Stage, but it does let you see one of the things I found most striking about the piece which is how extremely non-gendered it is -- everyone on that stage is dressed identically in pants and nude tank that makes them look topless, the whole corps looks like one and moves like one and there is nothing to distract you from that. Really, really cool experience.
And "The Dream" -- look, I'm a simple soul, and what I have discovered is that I love Ashton's silly panto-esque ballets. They are fun and they are funny and I love it when people get to be funny in dance! Dance jokes are good actually! Titania ballet-hopping her way towards Bottom in a way that manages to be simultaneously fairy-like and hilariously sultry, the arguing lovers constantly picking each other up and pirouetting a partner firmly Away from them Thank You, the rude mechanicals!! we wanted more rude mechanicals but I was so glad we got what we got. A+ Midsummer Night's Dream, would see again.

Mar. 21st, 2026 10:13 amSo, a while back S learned that there was a capybara cafe in our area. We always meant to go, but never got around to doing it for various reasons. Then, when she started making real steps toward moving, we decided to go when she got an interview for a job.
Well, that happened pretty damn quick. Then again, so did everything with her moving. She signs for a house at the end of the month.
Anyway, today is capybara day! :D We're going this afternoon and I'm so excited!
I might have pictures, but I'm not entirely sure on that. However, because I was thinking about images, I did get fresh tattoo pictures!
( Tattoo pictures! )

I DNF'ed 1/365 no Koibito. Not particularly likable characters. Hayate strung Takashi along because it felt good to be liked/see his reactions to Hayate touching him and Takashi is pathetic. 10 years and one 'date' a year. *smh* I could not see why these two like each other or why I should root for them. Even if I'd continued I'd have only gave it a 6 or 6.5.
Read v16 ch. 71-73 of Blue Exoricst!
Read ch.185 of D.Gray-Man.
Read ch. 6 of BASARA!
Read ep. 7-8 of Wizardly Tower.
Read the GL JK to Tomodachi no Okan and rated it 7.8/10!
Read the BL Aishichatta no, rated it 6.5/10.
Read ep. 100-114 of 19 Days!

Daily Happiness
Mar. 20th, 2026 08:19 pm1. It is the weekend! Today was fairly hassle-free, work-wise, and I got home by like four or so, which was nice, but it's even nicer to not have work tomorrow.
2. I found a new puzzle site to order from and I really like that they mark their puzzles with a no AI guarantee. (Not all of their puzzles have this guarantee, but you can filter for it and the majority of them seem to be.) I hope other sites implement that as well, because it would definitely make me more likely to order from a site that did that.
3. Carla got a catnip chew rope the other day and all the cats have shown some interest in it, but Molly seems to especially like it. No one's that into actually chewing it, though, just rubbing and writhing lol.

Mar. 20th, 2026 09:04 pm+ Work was nuts today; a really gnarly assignment crossed my desk and I'm like, ew. This one is going to be such a pain. (But I will manage.)
+ Going to Edmonton next week for a concert. Looking forward to it! Feels kind of silly to be away for three days, two of which will be spent on a bus, but I suppose a lot of people drive down to there for just one day in a similar way, so.
+ Received my FTH assignment. This one is going to be challenging, but interesting. I will need to do canon review and probably also some research. Hmm. (It's Hetalia, Liet/Pru.) Maybe I can make some notes while on the bus?
+ I'm going to Winnipeg in October to see Sabaton perform! *_* I was supposed to see them in Edmonton several years ago, but that trip never ended up happening. Anyway, the people I've mentioned the trip to generally react like "Eew, Winnipeg" but honestly, I'm pretty jazzed about it. Looking forward to the museums and art gallery and maybe also the zoo if I have time. Should be fun!

Three Metro notes.
Mar. 20th, 2026 10:54 pm1. Paying based on distance traveled rather than a flat fee per ride doesn’t encourage the perception of public transit as a social equalizer.
2. It’s still public transit.
3. A couple maps to orient on cardinal directions wouldn’t go amiss, though.

reading city watch part i + death-head's deals
Mar. 20th, 2026 07:03 pmGuards! Guards! and Men At Arms by Terry Pratchett
synopsis: wherein we meet the ankh-morpork city watch, led by one disillusioned captain sam vimes. dragons, secretive professional guilds, and variously chaotic magical citizens abound.
as promised, getting started on discworld! (i did read the wee free men years ago as well, but i don't remember much from it.) i'm having fun so far! the first book got me used to the world and the writing style, and then i enjoyed the second book even more. a lot of the characters delight me, in particular death lol. i want to try writing pov changes at the speed pratchett does them.
not related to the books themselves, but i don't really like the kobo books app. i didn't realize when i bought the bundle that i wasn't going to be able to get the books onto the e-reader i already own, so i've ended up having to figure out how best to read kobo books without a kobo e-reader. it had me trying to figure out why i'm fine reading fic in my phone browser but not books in this app. i think it's that flipping through page by page on a phone-sized screen makes the chunks feel too small, as opposed to scrolling continuously?
Death-Head's Deals by ninuiente
on tumblr and webtoons (mature content)
synopsis: this is basically a serial webcomic about a really nice hitman with bunny ears. alrick works as a "death-head", which means people can make deals with him to do anything - "retrieve this package", "kill all these people", etc - and as long as it's completed through a death-head, all resulting activities are legal. in exchange, the client must be willing to pay whatever price the death-head sets. it's like making a deal with the devil, except the devil is just some guy who does this as their full-time job, and there's a whole organization of such guys. for the average citizen, death-heads are just a scary part of normal life. (also, as with alrick's bunny ears, all characters in this world are humanoid with some level of animal characteristics.)
it was entertaining, but i don't think i'll follow along with future updates. on one hand, i do like the concepts of some characters and a lot of the character designs. on the other, i feel like some character moments needed more buildup and/or more depth.
this does make sense, considering that the creator has stated she's coming up with it as she goes along. i think i want it to be less episodic and disconnected than it is.
i also don't care about the romance storylines very much. they can all be summarized as: a nice young lady in a desperate situation consults a male death-head, and then she deals with the challenging power dynamic inherent in owing this man whatever he asks for in exchange. the details are different, but the broad strokes are too similar for me. if they're all going to be m/f, you could at least have a female death-head one time! shift around the power imbalance and who gets to be violent! i think some of the side characters hint at the possibilities, but the main romances do not.

spoilery thoughts
- i had a series of realizations about the title of Men at Arms as i went along. "Men" at Arms (non-humans, Angua who is not a "man" in multiple ways)... Men at "Arms" (the introduction of a gun; the idea that assassins don't do "unarmed" combat)...
- also the moment when i realized "gonne" is just "gun" 😂 before it became obvious, i thought it was going to be part of a word like chaconne or something
- it sort of surprised me to see vetinari out of sorts so soon in the series (when he gets shot at in his carriage, and the guard rescues him). he came across as so omniscient and in control in all of his appearances before then. i don't know if it'd feel different going in publication order, like if maybe you'd see even more of him before that point? but maybe i was just fooled by his early appearances
- i was excited to see sam vimes' boot theory of economics because i recognized it from tumblr screenshots haha
- and carrot and the patrician so cordially making arrangements for the future of the watch at the end??? what a pair

spoilers: what i'm thinking of here
dio cutting out alrick's tongue (sudden, jarring but also weirdly casual?), joon talking about a traumatic deal (again, brought up somewhat casually and then never mentioned again)this does make sense, considering that the creator has stated she's coming up with it as she goes along. i think i want it to be less episodic and disconnected than it is.

Welcome to Taggle!
Mar. 20th, 2026 10:20 pmWhat is Taggle?
Taggle is a multifandom Battleship-alike, where every year there is some light theming of the tagset (~30% of tags). This year's themes are horses, royalty, revolutions, and the sun.
When is Taggle?
We aim to have sign-ups during the last week of May and gameplay starting on the first week of June. We will start gathering tags before that – watch this space for further announcements!
How long is Taggle?
We're aiming for active gameplay period of around two weeks.
What are the biggest differences from Battleship?
We're making you do your own data entry for works checks (you can also ask a teammate to do this for you). We additionally have some differences in behind-the-scenes onboarding.
I would like to volunteer to help make this run!
Thank you! There are many places for you to volunteer. If your strengths are in team spirit management and Discord moderation, we have a potential team leader slot available (we already have 2; we will have 2 or 3 teams depending on number of sign-ups) and 1-2 leader's assistants (one per team; we already have 1). This is a player role.
If your strength is in Google Sheets, we will need spreadsheet helpers to make sure the event runs smoothly and that teams can plan and strategize accurately. This is a neutral, non-player role.
If you love data validation – or simply want a way to help that does not involve interacting with other people – we will also want a lot of works checkers, so that we can run approvals, square reveals, etc more frequently. This is potentially a player role.
The current mod team consists of head mod

My partner was out for a walk given the unusually warm weather we've been having. He texted me excitedly that he thought the swan might be back. (Some of you may remember we got a weeklong visit from one last year).
Then as he came closer he realized the swan seemed unmoving and stiff...
