Looks like it's time to dust off this thing again

It looks like the current Muskboy temper tantrum over on twitter is finally enough to make me jump ship (in the foreseeable future; I want to make sure I loose contact with as few friends as possible first) and let's be honest, I should've probably done that a while ago. Not even for some high-minded ideological reasons but just for my own mental health. (I am so bad these days at not looking into not just whoever the newest Main Character is, but also just... Reading The Comments when I really know I shouldn't.)

I wanted to like cohost as an alternative, especially since a few friends are already there, but more and more it looks like the people in charge don't really know what they're doing, and there's very little about the site that inspires confidence in me that it'll be able to handle an influx in users and/or stick around for long enough to, well, be a place to stay.

And, well, dreamwidth has been nothing if not reliable for well over a decade. My original account here is from spring 2009 ffs! Maybe I can even tempt some twitterfriends to look into setting up camp here; that's be nice...

Thank you for that link. I ran screaming from the wishy-washy language in cohost's content guidelines and didn't look back, but I've seen so many people blindly making accounts and, like- yeah no. It was already a holiday sale at the red flag store and it's good to have something a little more concrete to point people to.

I'm glad the link is helpful to you too! I only have a very basic understanding of this kind of stuff, so I'm also glad to be able to point at someone explaining in detail what's wrong with this ToS. Especially when it's someone I already trust to know what they're talking about and to not be alarmist about it at the same time.

Gonna second kalloway's thanks -- I knew bloody well I didn't like the look or the vibe from Cohost even though chunks of the ttrpg scene are heading there, and now I have a list as long as my arm why.

Glad to (point towards) help! And yeah, some of my friends are heading that way too (and I made an account and tried it out with a couple posts too admittedly) but now I really hope they rethink that plan.

Call me a cynic in this benighted era, but I don't really expect any group so dedicated to claiming ownership of every scrap their userbase dares to upload to go ahead and change their minds later.

(if by changing their minds you mean Cohost and not your friends. last night was a very long and very stupid night at work and I'm not firing on all pistons >.>;; )

Ohhh no. I noticed some fellow indie authors checking this site out as an alternative and this seems like the opposite of what they'd want... In general, none of that sounds good for anyone.

Yeah, even if we assume they'll clean up some of this, and even if a couple things might potentially not be as bad as they seem, it's just such a bad look.
I've only made a few inconsequential posts on cohost but I'd be super weary to post or advertise any creative works there.

I heard about it like, maybe a week before the ToS stuff was brought up by multiple people, but yeah, I doubt it would've attracted that much attention if it hadn't been for everything going on on twitter. The thing's apparently run by three people and suddenly thrust into the limelight and I sure don't envy the devs' position but... yeah, no thank you. They'd have to put in a lot of serious work to convince me at thia point.
